Moving Tips

  1. Choose the Right Removal Company – Choosing the right removal company will make the process so much easier and will reduce the stress associated with moving. Some removal companies even offer packing and cleaning services, meaning most of the hard work is done for you!

  2. Use Soft Items as Padding – You might be packing up your items yourself – that doesn’t mean you have to spend money on packing materials! Towels, sheets, socks and old clothes make great alternatives to provide safe padding to your items.

  3.  Avoid Mixing Items from Different Rooms – When it comes to packing, tackle each room separately to avoid mixing up your items. When it comes time to unpack, everything will be in the right room.

  4. Pack Jewellery in Egg Cartons and Toilet Rolls – Egg cartons are perfect for transporting jewellery. All you need to do is tape them shut so your jewellery doesn’t fall out. For necklaces and loose bracelets, put one end through the roll and fasten them – this will help prevent them being tangled.

  5. Use Bin Bags for Clothes on Hangers – You don’t need to fold and pack each piece of clothing separately. Simply wrap up the clothes (still on the hangers!) in a bin bag. When you arrive at your new house, simply remove the bin and your clothes are on their hangers ready to be put away!

  6. Spent Years on Your Garden? Bring it with You! – Many people spend years of time and effort on their garden, and leaving that behind can be painful. But it doesn’t have to be! There are ways to bring your favourite plants with you to your new home.

  7. Pack a Moving Day Survival Kit – There are going to be certain things you need to have on moving day, and the last thing you want to do is spend hours rifling through boxes. To prevent you wasting time, pack a bag full of essential items so they are easily accessible.

  8. Get Rid of What You Don’t Need – Donating or throwing away any items you don’t want or need anymore will free up so much space and help you with your packing. If you have friends helping you move, give them first choice of anything you plan on giving away as thanks.

  9. Use Our Quick Packing Hacks – Packing all your items up is going to take a lot of time. These packing hacks will make your packing more efficient and the process will be much quicker. For example, use a sandwich bag to store your screws and bolts and tape the bag to the item it belongs to.

  10. Cut Holes in Boxes – Heavy boxes can be difficult to lift when you have nothing to grip on to. Using a box cutter, cut a hole on either side of your heavy boxes to create handles for easy lifting.

  11. Learn Some Delicious One-Pot Recipes – Moving is tiring, and most people opt for ordering (unhealthy) takeaway. Instead, energise yourself with these one-pot recipes.

  12. Use Wine Cases for Your Glassware – Empty wine cases are useful for keeping your glasses safe, by storing them in separate compartments. Give them some extra padding with newspaper to prevent damage during the move, and you’re set!

  13. Save Money While You Move – Moving house is expensive, and depending on the price of your new home, the distance you’re moving and your estate agent fees, the costs can run into the tens of thousands. Minimising the costs and saving money wherever you can will therefore be hugely beneficial.

  14. Take Photographs of Your Electronics – Before you disconnect your electronics and pack them away, take a photo of the wires in the back so you remember where they go – it will save you time when you have to reassemble them.

  15. Keep Your Liquids Separate – Keeping liquids like cleaning supplies and toiletries in a separate plastic container means that if anything breaks open or spills, the rest of your items won’t be soaked or damaged.

  16. Need to Move Your Pet? – Don’t underestimate how stressful a house move can be on your pets. Your home is their territory and suddenly leaving and moving to a new place may confuse and unsettle them. Keep in mind that dogs and cats react differently and should be dealt with in different ways.

  17. Change Your Address – Change your home address for everything approximately two weeks before moving. Make sure you redirect your mail, notify your bank, update your electoral role details and online deliveries, to name a few! This change of address checklist will help you keep track.

  18. Moving with Children – Children thrive on routine, and a huge disruption to it like moving house can make them act out.  Keeping the same routines like bed times, meals and bath times will help them adapt.

  19. Take Photos of Your Rental Property – Take photos of your old home once it’s empty and cleaned. Do the same when you arrive at your new home, in case you end up with difficult landlords and issues regarding your deposit.

  20. Pack Books into Suitcases – As useful as packing boxes are, they are difficult to lift and often rip when they have books inside them. Instead, pack them into suitcases with wheels so you can drag them along.
